Willem is the standard spelling, with the V pronunciation, in South Africa as well as The Netherlands. I've never heard of Willem Dafoe or heard his name. All the Willem people I know and know of who went to an Anglophone country ended up using Will rather than condemn themselves to non-stop explanations.
