Alexander is too formal but please not Alex please" ,- exactly.
My husband was bullied by a kid named Alex, he detests the nickname. People are still going to use a nickname, so Zander/Xander it is.
That said: Most people don't expect a Xander to be a 45 year old man.

Back in the 1970s my mother-in-law read a book. It had a main character named Alexander that went by the nn Zander. IT's the reason she fell in love with the name. My FIL dislikes NNs, none of the kids use them = except for my husband. He started using Zander in college, then changed the spelling due to the fish. He now uses Xander, which annoys his mom.
Xander/Zander is just a way to keep Alexander fresh. It's like the various nicknames that xcome from Elizabeth/Kathernie and change each generation. Liz, Beth, Betsy, Betty, Elly, Liza, Kate, Kitty, Katie, Kathy. Xander is the 'in' nickname for ALexander, people will use it alone. Just like they did Alex. And it will age and become just as accepted as Alex. My MIL received quite a bit of backlash when she named my husband. Everyone stated that the name was old-fashioned and ugly, that he would be teased. Now people talk about how overused the the name is.
