Re: Zzyzx
in reply to a message by I like old names
I actually talked on the phone briefly years ago with a mother whose son was named Zzyzx. She explained that her husband was a long distance truck driver and was fascinated by the Interstate exit in the desert in southern California with this name. They pronounced it "ZEE-zix" and the child's nickname was Zeke. It seems that people who live near the California place pronounce it "ZYE-zix", though.

why do I now have the song ...
Playing in my head that goes "I'm poppin' little white pills and my eyes are open wide/ Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight?"
I have several truck drivers in my family, all sides. I've heard their nicknames for various places and I think poor Zeke is lucky his dad wasn't obsessed with for example, the Snow Chi Minh Trail or the Suicide Circle or Beantown.
