1. I love Ralph Waldo Emerson, and just before the name went *kaboom* for girls, I entertained the idea of Emerson as a middle name. I really can't stand the name on a girl; it doesn't sound feminine in the slightest--even if she could be called Emmy, the name connotes an older man to me. Ralph Waldo, for example, or Charles Emerson Winchester III. :) I would love to see it on a boy.
2. Perhaps...
James Emerson
Roger Emerson
Arthur Emerson
Edward Emerson
Frederick Emerson
George Emerson
Harold Emerson
Vincent Emerson
Laszlo Emerson
Thomas Emerson
Johannes Emerson
Paul Emerson
Jerome Emerson
Alphonse Emerson
Matthias Emerson
Lemuel Emerson
Gerald Emerson
Lorenz Emerson
Francis Emerson
Franz Emerson

Wow
Am I the only one nerdy enough to think that this is a super literary name? I like both names, and I even like the combo (though it's borderline "trendyish" to me), but it kind of seems like naming a kid Monet Picasso or Bach Mozart.
What are the convulsions of a city in comparison with the insurrections of the soul?
Man is a depth still greater than the people.

I agree!
Emerson is one of those guys who quotes remarkably well, but the concepts behind his larger texts (ie essays, etc; not quotations) can be a little loopy. But I enjoy him anyway.
I can't stand that this has been used as a girl name. Yuck! But I think it would make a nice boy's MN. One of my fave combos is Julian Hawthorne (for Nathaniel Hawthorne), so I can see Emerson in that capacity. I adore Poe, but Edgar, Allan, and Poe are unappealing as names. Oh, well. They can't all be winners. :)
PS: Try The American Scholar. Some great quotations.
