Most of these were before my time as well, though I think I'm older than you (Hurricane Andrew happened when I was an infant). I'll never forget Katrina and Rita back-to-back, hammering the Gulf of Mexico the way they did - nor the political maelstrom that followed (I was a freshman in high school, just starting to become more "aware" and not take what I was told at face value).
It's a shame how stigmatized the name Katrina was for a long time, because I've always liked the name. It might not be as taboo anymore, though. Although I checked the popularity stats and the drop-off is a bit less steep than I'd thought it would be; but it still fell out of the Top 1000 a decade ago.
Other names on this list I like:
Audrey
Carla
Carol
Connie (as a nickname for Constance)
David
Dennis (he's a real menace, isn't he?)
Diana
Donna
Dorian
Elena (I had no idea this was the name of a hurricane!)
Florence
Gustav
Hazel
Ione (no idea this was a hurricane name, either)
Irene (oh, this was a bad one)
Iris
Isabel
Joan
Laura
Matthew (yeah, this one, too)
Michael
Noel (why don't I remember this one?)
Otto
Roxanne

I agree it is a shame. Katrina is actually a pretty nice name. Someone I used to know from a few years ago mentioned that she once had a friend named Katrina and whenever she would get mad (which sounded like it was often) her and her other friends would call her hurricane Katrina. :(
I'm sure the stigmatism of the name is still plenty there and likely won't make a resurgence anytime soon, which again, is a shame.
