Both are nice, but Margaret is more timeless and has lots of cool nicknames.

Megan is dated. So, I suppose, is Margaret, but it was dated long ago and should be ready for renewed usage by now. Margaret also has a wide variety of nicknames to choose from, including of course Megan, which I think is an advantage.

There is only one way to pronounce Margaret. So many Megan people think they are MEEgan that I never know which version to guess.

Megan because I really dislike Margaret but Megan feels dated and overused.

If no nicknames allowed, Megan. It's much nicer sounding and looking than Margaret.
If nicknames are allowed, Margaret (I'd use Maggie but there are others that compete well against Megan imo).

I like Margaret, with all its nickname options, and because it sounds like an old lady name. With Margaret you can use Meg too and have the best of both worlds. Megan is really cute but I think it's nicer in the middle anyway.

The sound of Megan is nicer, in my opinion.
