I mentioned
Lillian to a (non-name nerd) friend of mine recently and she said "ew that's an old lady name", which surprised me. I've never thought of
Lillian as particularly dated, even though I live in the UK where
Lily is very trendy and popular right now and
Lillian less so. I like it and would use it as a long name for
Lily.
Lily has long been a favorite of mine, but nevertheless I switch between preferring
Lillian because it has more substance and preferring
Lily because it's sweeter and less serious. I like that
Lillian rhymes with million, billion, and trillion; for some reason, I think that's neat.
LISTEN TO THE MUSTN'TS
-
Shel Silverstein
Listen to the MUSTN'TS, child,
Listen to the DON'TS
Listen to the SHOULDN'TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON'TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me—
Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be.
