It doesn't seem very Old English-y to me. I'm always surprised to remember what the database says about it.I knew one Chad growing up. The name seemed dorky and weird, but not in a loserish way. About like Troy or Wade or Thad(deus) - other guys I knew with fairly unusual names at the time. All nice, competent, masculine individuals. Just with dorky little names. They just seemed to carry the names off, the way some guys carry off wearing a bright purple shirt - no problem.I'm old enough to remember when the meme (in the US), or what passed for a meme then, was "hanging chads."
So, besides its image of being like Brad but more so, it's a word. I don't like the sound of it personally, and don't see the appeal. Not that it's a bad name; it's fine, it's just ... unappealing to me, same as Brad and Thad are. I'm halfway between suspicious and mystified towards people who like it enough to name a kid Chad.

I think of Chad, the Republic of Chad.

I actually like it. Despite the prolific memes I associate it with good guys like Chadwick Boseman or Chad from High School Musical (who was a jock..) xD
