Tamara is one of those names that I either love because it's super-classy with a downmarket nickname, or hate because it's super classy with a downmarket nickname. Today, it's love. I also think "Tam" as a nickname is very chic, if Tammy is too infantile or silly for some. I've never seen Tammy used independently, but I can see its appeal for some.
