It does seem childish, esp when it could just be Jo.
I think Jo (= Joe) is more truly neuter than Joey. And more appealing. But still a nick.
Joey as a full name, and not as a nick, does seem sort of trendy-galname-like (again). Since Zoe (y) and Chloe (y) set a precedent recently. But I don't like it. It makes me think of baby kangaroos.
I might mishear it as Joy.
