Calvin is fine, but Melvin is seriously unnatractive and very much dated. I don't normally associate names with colors unless it's obvious, but I very much associate the name Melvin with that dark yellow crayon that no one wanted to be stuck with.
The only -vin ending names that I really like is Gavin, and Davin is nice too.

I don’t really like either all that much since they’re both pretty dated but I definitely prefer Calvin. It’s not nerdy, but it’s intelligent sounding, probably because of the unit of measurement. My mom has a hair client named Calvin, and he’s a scientist. Melvin just reminds me of the giraffe from Madagascar. Or a clumsy nerd.

I think both are solid names, some of the more appealing -vin names to me. I haven’t ever met a Calvin irl so I associate the name entirely with underwear though.

I've never met a Melvin. The only Calvin I knew was very wonderful, but the name itself is a bit too Presbyterian for me.
