Turn of the century sibset
Professors Evans' recent column on Heather mentioned that the first Heather born to American parents had sisters called Olive, Ruby, Pearl, Myrtle and Ivy.
• What are your thoughts on these names, individually, and as a set?
• If you were to add another brother and sister, what would you name them?

I like Heather, Ruby and Pearl. The subset goes well

So Olive, Ruby, Pearl and Ivy are absolutely my style, but I don’t love Heather and Myrtle. I see below it was mentioned there was also Lillian, Sadie and William. All the names work together nicely imo, though I do wish they had have stuck to the botanical/earthy theme. If I had to add another brother and sister, they would be Fern and Jasper.
I like Myrtle and Ruby as sisters. And Olive and Heather seem more interesting to me together than apart. My favorites in 2022 are Pearl and Ivy, though.
I think Fern or Sterling would go ok.
Or Jessamine and Earnest.

In addition to the sisters I mentioned in the column, there were two others called Lillian and Sadie. The youngest child was a brother called William. I wonder if Sadie felt a bit different from her sisters. :)
Also, when she was an adult in later censuses the youngest daughter was Iva instead of Ivy. I figure she wanted to have something a bit less botanical.

As a set, the theme is too obvious for my liking, but each to their own.
Individually the only one that I would actually use is Pearl. Ruby is too cutesy/childish in vibe to me, Olive is too strongly associated with the fruit (or colour), Heather is dated to the 80s/90s (or 70s/80s) and Myrtle is quite ugly. Ivy is ok.
Without repeating any initials I would name a brother Jasper and another sister Violet.

I think Pearl is my favorite of the group as well, followed by Ivy.
