are both family names; I much prefer
Polly
, though I'm not sure why. Perhaps
Molly
is too close to the Afrikaans word 'mollig', which means chubby. I don't think of either of them as nicknames for
Mary
or anything else.

It's funny that you mention that. I have an aunt named
Molly
and my mother, her twin, was named
Polly
. Talk about overly matching names. Lol!
