Besides the fact that the association with Sesame Street is completely overpowering, the names themselves are kind of ugly. And while yes, there are other associations that can be made, they are far less famous than the obvious.
I actually knew an Elmo once upon a time. He was significantly older than me - quite frankly he may have predated Sesame Street - but he regarded his name with resentment.
