Isla vs Maeve
I've recently been working on the last "novel" in a trilogy that's very near and dear to me, and have been contemplating about changing the name of one of my characters for a while now. I'm hoping you guys could help me decide. Here's a brief description of her, if it at all helps: 9 YO. Redhead, brown eyes, light freckles, petite-on the smaller side for her age. She's extremely precocious & strong willed. (Oh, very much so!), She has two older brothers named, Lars (17 YO) Finn (15 YO) and their parents Melanie & Patrick-although never physically in the story (pretty much just mentioned)
Story takes place in modern times in a small town in Maine. The name I have for her right now, and been working with is 'Isla' and although I like the name and feel that it works for her, I've been very much considering, 'Maeve' (Mae/Maevie as possible nicknames) for her. I believe it might be better suited to her. But I'm not sure. My main concern really is that I have another character named David (Primarily known by 'Dave', along with having a couple of other characters who have that distinct 'ay' sound in their names. But the one with Dave seem to be the most problematic, if at all. The two characters are pretty much secondary characters, and don't have any scenes together, so I wonder if that matters at all. Also would a Maeve from Maine be weird you think? Lars, Finn & Isla
Lars, Finn & Maeve "Mae or Maevie-not sure how on spelling yet, if I do choose it.)*~Rate my PNLs!~*

Thanks everyone! I honestly found your input EXTREMLY helpful. It's decided then, Maeve it is. (:
Good thing she isn't in a ton of scenes, otherwise changing her name at this point would prove to be a pain lol.

I think Maeve works fine, and it’s more of a redhead name than Isla. I don’t think people will notice that Maeve/Mae and David sound similar, or that “Maeve from Maine” sounds weird. Isla doesn’t really suit her in my opinion, and Maeve is more popular anyways.

Yeah, I really think it is too. It's just these little uncertainties that stopped me from using it right away. Isla is nice and I actually prefer it more, I think it doesn't really suit the character nearly as much as Maeve does. Isla makes me envision more of a 'blonde' or 'burnett' type.
Thanks.

If you don’t like the initials of their names put together (I’d like to point out it spells FML), may I suggest Isa? Or maybe, despite its commonality, Isabella? It’s your choice, but I think Isla doesn’t suit her. I can’t really put my finger on why.

Could also name her Eve, which is similar to Maeve.

Precocious redhead is more Maeve than Isla. Isla seems sunny and laid-back. Maeve is more serious and sassy.Having her be called Maevie by other characters would be appealing, and also would break up the Dave / Maeve rhyme.I don't think a Maeve from Maine is weird at all.

Isla is more of a redhead name than Maeve. On the other hand Maeve sounds better with Finn and Lars than Isla does. Initials are more of a concern with characters than overall sounds I think? Readers are more likely to confuse David/Dave and Dana than Dave and Maeve, at least imo. That the character comes from Maine is of little to no consequence either way imo. If Isla is what has been working, I would stick with that.

I never thought about that. Dana and Dave (David) would definitely be problematic than Dave and Maeve would. Thanks
