Today's Name of the Day: Diana
Today's Name of the Day is... Diana. WDYT?Personally, it took me a long time to warm up to it, mainly because I'm used to the English pronunciation (die-AN-uh) that has the first syllable "die." As in... telling someone to go die. Even Princess Diana didn't shake this association, because people kept calling her "Princess Di" (this became especially eerie to me as a child, after her death).Nowadays I can appreciate it, but I'm still unlikely to use it. I had a few classmates in high school with this name, who were all Latinas - so while they went by die-AN-un at school and among friends, I suspect they were called dee-AHN-ah by their families.***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381

The die part of the name used to bother me and make me laugh a little. But over time I truly found it to be a beautiful, elegant, and refined timeless name. Not to mention it has power thanks to the goddess. It’s a great name really. I also think of One Direction and Michael Jackson. Diana is a name any girl should feel lucky to have.

Best female name out there.

It’s ok but I too prefer the « Dee-ana” pronunciation.

It's so elegant and gorgeous in my opinion.

Di is what puts me right off. Diana itself is pretty and also dignified, and would make a good mn. Unlike the majority of people on this planet, I was no admirer of Princess Diana and I totally loathed the whole 'Princess Di' nonsense: same as with Prince William's wife now. Nobody who knows her has ever called her Kate, but Katherine doesn't fit comfortably into headlines, so Kate she has become. I'm happy about Diane in its natural habitat, but where I live it sounds like die-ANN and I don't like it, though Dianne is worse. I knew Diana people and Diane people at school, but not many. I had a British colleague once who was called Dee, and I assumed she was Diane or Diana, but she was actually Dinah: she'd been called Di until she was a teenager and read Kafka! She then insisted on being called by her initial ... like Kafka's character, K. Her husband's name was Don, and they sounded like two Scottish rivers.

I love Diana! It I one of my favorites ever since I was a kid. I also like Diane, but I would only use it as a middle name if it flows better.

I love it and prefer it. I would definitely consider it for a daughter #2 if one was had. It's just so sweet and elegant. I have yet to find it's equal in a name that encapsulates & embodies both strength and delicacy so well in a single name. The die part doesn't bother me tbh. I have an aunt Diane we called Didi (pronounced Die-die) as a kid so there is minimal association to mortality in my mind. So many positive associations with the name too. Princess Diana, Wonder Woman, the Greek Goddess. It's 1 in a million imo.

Despite the "die" part, I prefer over the pronunciation "dee". It sounds prettier in my opinion. The name is likeable but it's not for me.
