You seem a little contradictory here. You say they should just give them the nickname as the full name if that's what they're going to use, but then also find the existence of nicknames sad.

I don't love nicknames as given names. Some have enough identity as their own name but many just sound too childish or informal to carry through life and it eliminates options.
