I like it. It has fun wise old counselor or philosopher association but is also an herb, making it more nature based than most scholar adjacent names. I prefer it as a middle name because it can sound like a title.
Sage is one of the few names that really seems unisex, which makes me want to use either a clearly feminine middle name so it wont seem like I'm afraid/ashamed of gender.

Sage Zora Neale - In honor of Zora Neale Hurston.
Sage Hypatia - After the mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher in Alexandria
Sage Xena
