Ann is, indeed, plain and short, but I love it. It's timeless. Plus, there's a lot of middle names and last names that work with it. Anne is also good.

I prefer it with an e as a first name. As a middle, I don’t really feel either way about the e. I think it is pretty, but I’d either want it to just be a nickname for something longer or have a really great flow with a longer middle name to balance it out.

Its nice, but it would be better if it was modern and if it was a middle name.

I actually prefer Ann over Anne. The E at the end seems unnecessary. I like the clean and simple look of Ann, it's so refreshing!

I prefer Anne to Ann and strangely I have known more Anne’s than Ann’s.

One person I used to work with my “Auntie” Anne was just going to be Anne LN but when her father went to register her birth he decided to give her a middle name. Her middle name is her mother’s first name so she is Anne Mary LN. Anne always says can you think of anything more boring than Anne Mary. Her cousin who is just a month younger than her is Ann instead of Anne but “Auntie “ Anne was always jealous as a girl because her cousin Ann got two middle names (along the lines of but not) Sophia Lorraine which she thought jazzed it up.

Anne Shirley was right - Anne is infinitely better than Ann.

My mn is Anne, after my paternal grandmother, Sarah Anne. So that's what I've grown up with and it's the version I instinctively expect. I prefer it to Ann; not sure how I might feel about them if I had a different mn. It is also my daughter's mn.

Ann looks unfinished, but I don't mind it. I think I've known more Ann people than Anne ones, but I'm not sure. I find Anna mildly annoying, like Elle: palindromes aren't my thing. But, a good friend's daughter is Anna, with no nn, so I just smile and enjoy her. Annie doesn't please me at all; nor do Janie and Ruthie.

Definitely plain and short. Prefer Anne.

I've had a very unpleasant Ann in my life growing up so it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Plus it is about as plain as you can possibly get, which as someone who favors elaborate choices this is not necessarily a virtue. Anne I tolerate a smidge more due to the more balanced look the e provides like a bookend. Annie is sweet and I like it in terms of nicknames.

It is very simple and plan, but in that it could be a bit refreshing, a bit like a 'palette cleanser'... I'm just extra-everything all the time, so I don't love it, but I do get the appeal. The sound isn't bad, and I think it has good cross-culture possibilities if that's a consideration. It's really not a bad name at all, but there's nothing thrilling about it.

I prefer Anne, and I like Anna. My name's Susanna, so some days I feel Anna and -anna names are sorta no-go for me, but I do like Anna. Anne seems more complete and is more common in the UK I think - I know people called both Ann and Anne especially through work and when writing to an Ann I always have to double check the name, Anne I just write Anne. Anne feels more natural to me. Ann is less common and more minimalist.

Annie is so cute. I love Annie, but it's one of my nicknames so using it as a nickname for anyone else isn't a possibility, although obviously Annie for Susanna is less intuitive. My dad sometimes calls me Susannie or Annie etc. and I am picky about nicknames for my name (dislike Sue and Susie) but I like that and I wish Annie was a more common nickname for Susanna. But Ann "Annie" is sweet.

I think Ann would be neat with a super OTT middle name or more than one middle name, a cool contrast. As it's so minimalist, Ann + something frilly or unusual or distinctive would work well. I don't like the idea of Ann as a middle name, it's no different to Anne in that role and would be dated and boring.
