I prefer Elise as a nn for Elisabeth. In South Africa it is usually pronounced with an s sound; if parents want it to have a z sound, they spell it Elize. I wouldn't call it romantic or classic: it's just another nickname used as a full name. And I've known plenty of them!

It's not a common name in the area I live in so it would probably be fine. Again, I have personally never met one. I have, however, known several Elisabeth/Elizabeths - they usually just went by Liz.
