I can't say I'm a fan of either, but slow and slimy Sloane is really not encouraging, and then there are or were Sloane Rangers; if Maxine is what you like, then go for it. She could well become Maxie rather than Max if you think that would be better - I do. And it might be easier to go by Maxine as an adult if she started from Maxie and not Max. But, Max can be somewhat neutralised by a really feminine mn:
