Re: Nicole
in reply to a message by Katie
As an early 90s baby, I heard Nicole said so dang much growing up... some of them went by their full names, others by Nikki. I knew more girls called Nicole / Nikki than boys called Nicholas / Nick - and the only reason I bring that up is because Nicholas (while maybe being slightly dated) is one of my favorite names for a boy, whereas I have never warmed up to Nicole. I suspect that this is due to the different emphases: Nicholas has the "Nick" part stressed, whereas Nicole stresses "Cole" - and I'm not really a fan of Cole (coal).
It probably doesn't help that one of my childhood bullies was named Nicole (no nickname).
The big hit movie with girls of my generation, Ever After, chose the characters' names well (particularly for the American audience it seemed to be catering to). The wicked stepmother, Rodmilla, had a name likely borne by no girl in the audience. Marguerite, the wicked stepsister, would have been quite rare (even if there were Margarets / Maggies in the audience, it's not quite the same). The name of the nicer stepsister, Jacqueline (ZHAK-LEEN), would've been slightly more common. And the Cinderella character, whose real name was Danielle and pseudonym was Nicole (after her mother), used names that would've belonged to many girls in the audience.
