Re: Favorite Fantasy Names
in reply to a message by Layla
I like to include Anakin, Padme, Faramir, Skysong, and Galadriel in spazzy combos sometimes. I'm sure there's others, but those came to mind first.Anakin's not that likable of a character, but it's such a good madeup name. It reminds me of Ananke and also modern trendy names. It could be unisex. In fanfiction, it's widely accepted that the meaning is "rain bringer" (based on a madeup language used by slaves on Tatooine)...on that note, Leia doesn't mean "weary" or "cow" on Tatooine; it means "krayt dragon (and associated abstract concepts)", and Luke is derived from Lukka which means "sandstorm (and associated abstract concepts)"...yeah. And fyi, Obi-Wan Kenobi basically means "no one from nowhere". :/Padme is already a legit (and pretty) name, but I wouldn't use it because my main association is Star Wars.Galadriel kind of reminds me of how my mom had a horse named Galahad. They sound illustrious. I wouldn't use either, but both would be interesting to see used.Skysong is called "Kit" in a book and is a baby dragon. I don't think I'd use it? But I like it more than Sky, the same way I don't really like Lark, but Meadowlark and Larkspur and Larkin are okay.I would probably be willing to use Faramir, if I had an SO who wanted to; it's just so pretty, and I already like Yaromir and Faris. Same thing for Eowyn. Which seems weird because I'm not that into Lord of the Rings, but Tolkien was a good namer...or maybe it's because I'm not into it, that the character connections in this case matter less to me.GRR Martin has a lot of good ones also, but all I can think of right now are Oberyn and Jaehaerys. I'd maybe be willing to use Oberon, and Oberyn seems much more personable, but I can't get over how tied to the character it is. I wouldn't veto it, but I wouldn't argue in favor of it.Jaehaerys is endearing because it's like Jay (Jay is so cool) dressed up in his Sunday best, except his best isn't a suit, it's a homemade knit sweater with a dragon on it.Plus Domeric. I've never quite liked Dominic but the mer in there makes it a little better. It's basically Emeric / Meric but more consonant heavy.I like Magenta as a GP, and I think that's used for a character in a series, but I haven't read it.Oh, and from Sabriel, the names of the bells (which were named after magical creative entities, kind of) were cool - I think I liked Astarael and Mosrael for a while, which at some point just morphed into extra fondness for Astrid, Astraea, Tariel and Mozelle. Also from that series: Torrigan, which could be cute IRL, I guess? It's obscure enough that I wouldn't worry about (the potential awkwardness of) most people recognizing it, and close enough to my name that I could say there's a connection...but it's not something I'd think to use.I think Veralidaine from Immortals is how I started liking Verdiana / Veridiana / Viridiana. I thought Veralidaine was super weird and clunky, then I ran across Verdiana, which seems more relatable, so they kind of both grew on me by association.~ song of the week: "Little Sparrow"
