I knew an elderly Clarice once who was always called Clary. She had a sister, Patricia, who was always Pat. They had been members at the tennis club for decades, and still 'played' though they couldn't run: their opponents courteously hit straight back to them. So the memories aren't encouraging, but the name itself is OK, but only as a nn.

I've seen Clary before, and I tend to think of it as a cute botanical new agey NN - I associate it very closely with Sage and Clarity. I think it's also a surname? It'd be pretty as a MN, too.I've never seen it spelled Clarie, but I like that a lot as either a nickname or standalone name: I've been wondering if there was a way to spruce up Carrie lately, and I've also been liking Claribel lately, so it strikes me as sort of being in the middle of those.

Clary is cute as a nickname. I like Claire as a middle but find it kind of boring as a first name. Coming from someone with a boring 1 syllable name myself.
