I prefer Gail as a nickname for Abigail over Abby. Gail is also a great middle name - Elizabeth Gail, Eleanor Gail, Margaret Gail, Olivia Gail, Charlotte Gail, etc. There's also Dorothy Gail (Gale) if you're a Wizard of Oz fan.

I've never encountered a Gail in South Africa. Which is a pity - I like it. But I don't enjoy Abigail one bit, so I'd use Gail, if at all, as an independent name.
