I've only encountered it as a nn for Cheryl. Which I don't much like, but I certainly prefer it to Cherry and, indeed, Sherry.

My first thought was the character from the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The character says “ My name’s Sherry, Sherry Valance but I get called Cherry because of my hair.”My second thought was my primary 7 (11-12 years old) teacher whose name was Cherry Smith. Mrs Smith (not real name) was a good teacher who made sure the whole class finished the year with good grades.I like it as a nn but not a full name.

I really like it, although it's my mum's nn so I'm somewhat biased. I don't mind it as a first, and I don't think it would be all that unusual where I live. It's fun and sweet.

I think it’s only okay as a nickname.
