I like the meaning, and would assume he was black. I guess if I met one I'd think it was just another interesting ethnic kinda name.

I would wonder if it’s short for anything. I knew an Obi at university who was Nigerian, and I know another guy who goes by Obi as a nn from his surname, which is O’Brien.

I would think that his parents are Star Wars fans at a high, maybe insane level. Anyway, it is a nice name.

If I met an Obi I would think his parents are geeks, maybe otaku-types, or hard-core Star Wars fans.
