I've asked 50-something, who lives in Russia. He's a huge fan of Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet, the poet, and has nothing against that name. But even younger people (his daughter, a student) consider this name dated and unsophisticated, especially its NN. And you can't get away without NN :). They almost always use NN in Russia. You won't be called Afanasy, most of the time it's just Afonya.
And here is that movie, yeah. Boomers still remember it, I guess.
But of course tastes differ.
