Maria is a favorite of mine. My husband really can't stand it so it was never on a list for our own daughter. It's a beautiful name, works in lots of different languages and cultures, and you can picture it on anyone from newborn to over a hundred.
I happen to like that there aren't really any obvious nns, though I guess you could use Mia or Ria or Mar if you really wanted to.
