Vivien for a boy?
Do any of the various spelling...Vivian, Vyvyan, Vivien...make it better or worse?

Vivien is a very pretty girl's name, as are the spelling Vivianne, Vivienne, & Vivian. For a boy, I much prefer Vivian.

I'm not repelled by it--though I prefer Vivian, if for a boy--but I love Vivian and Vivienne so much for a girl, that I don't care for it as much on a boy.

I love Vivian (this spelling) for a boy, with Viviana or Vivienne for girls. Personally, I think it sounds handsome and has a very Victorian feel to it. The spelling Vivien is okay, but Vyvyan has too many y's for my liking; combined with the v's, it looks very confusing.

I love Vivian on a guy, personally, but I also love it on a girl. IMO, Vivian looks masculine while Vivien / Vivienne looks feminine. I think Vyvyan just looks weird and unsuitable for either sex, but if I had to make a guess upon seeing the spelling, I'd guess girl, not guy.

I'd like it on a boy. Not the spelling Vyvyan, though--too kre8tiv. I'd probably pair it with a strong, masculine mn.

I love the name Vivian for a boy, however it's my grandmother's name so I probably wouldn't use it as a first name! I like it as a middle name though :-)

Are you serious?? And other people LIKE this idea?Sorry. There are so many great GUYS names starting with V- Victor, Vincent, even Virgil could work. NOT Vivian! Please!

Vivian was originally a male name.

I think that if you were to use the name on a boy, either Vivian or Vivien would be best.

I love both Vivien and Vivian for a boy, I once knew a man called Vivian, and recently saw another in my local paper

Not VivienSince it's Vivien Leigh, aka Scarlett O'Hara to me and always will be. Vivian would be fine on either, though my instinctive reaction is 'girl'. I'm afraid Vyvyan looks like someone's being playing with the keyboard, though Oscar Wilde did legitimise it a bit, if you can do that!_____________________________________________________________________Elinor

Don't like it, but I do know a man Vivian. *NT*

I love Vivian for a boy. I think the Vyvyan spelling is the most masculine, because of the number of male Vyvyans that use the spelling.

Both Vivian and Vivien are wonderful for a boy imo. Vyvyan, despite being one of Oscar Wilde's sons' names, is way too kre8tyv for me.

I like the "Vivian" spelling.Vyvyan just doesn't look right to me, but it was the name of Oscar Wilde's son, right? Even so... I'd save that spelling for a mn.Vivien, to me, is a name for a French boy. I'm willing to accept it as unisex, though.Vivian, however, I love love love! And only for a boy. It's one of my very favourite names.I like Vivienne, Viviane, Viviana, and Vivia for girls.EDIT: Added girls' names.

This has never occurred to me before, but I think it's rather sweet. Hmm.-- Sarah

The only male Vivian I've ever known was the guy from the Brit sitcom "The Young Ones" (and probably 95% of this board is too young to know what that is...) He was such a freak though, he doesn't do much to make it seem more masculine to me. It just seemed like one more weird thing. Other Vivians I'm met/known have always been women. Vivian is the only spelling I like. And for a female.

Wasn't his name spelled Vyvyan, though? I personally prefer the name Vivian on a girl, but the spelling Vyvyan makes it seem more masculine to me because of that crazy punk character in the Young Ones :-)

Could be. I don't recall.

It's the first thing I think of too! (I'm 19, but live in England, where the Young Ones is still pretty massive, despite finishing years ago!) I like it more as a girl's name, though.
