Shakira is nms, but it's a bit pop-culture-ish, and, no offense to the singer, but I don't like namimg a child this, considering how popular Shakira (the singer) is.

I like Shakira, and only Shakira. The pop singer is actually part Arabic on her mother's side, and that's why she bears an Arabic name.

I am not overly concerned about the pop star connection. To me, and this may sound weird or bad but no offense is intended, it sounds like a black name to me, though I realize it's not, but it reminds me of Shanequa and Shauntaevia and some others I've heard of. Please don't mistake me, I don't think there is anything wrong with names like these, but where I am, there is a certain stereotype.I definitely prefer it spelled Shakira. And I like the pop star!~Lillian~

I dislike the name and the singer, but I dislike 'alternate' spellings even more. :-/ ~Heather~

It's not that I don't like the singer, a few of her catchier songs have made it onto my mp3 player, but pop culture influenced names really leave me cold. Something seems so superficial about them. It's really impossible to judge the name outside of that context. I think I'd like it, but I really can't say.

I love just plain Shakira. People might ask if the child was named after the singer, but I think it is pretty left as is.*****************************************************

I think it would be too obviously referential to use, but it is a very pretty name. I definitely like Shakira the best. :)-- Sarah
