Re: Thoughts on Ethel?
My great grandmothers were Ethel and Esther. I thank God Ethel didn't die right before I was born, because I'd have been stuck with Ethel as a first name if she had. As it is, I'm stuck with Esther (I go by my middle name) which is plenty ugly enough, but even it pales in comparison to Ethel. Ethel has such a heavy, thumping sound to it. It's so drab and dumpy and colorless. It's a sad, threadbare brown cardigan of a name. Edna, however, is even worse, and that's saying something.

Ethel and Edna belong in the dumpster of names, along with Agatha and Agnes and those kinds of old names... They sound like you’re throwing them up out of your mouth and bring to mind mothballs and cat hair everywhere.
