Aileen
I recently found out that this seems to be the Scottish version of Eileen.I thought they were pronounced the same, but listened to some Scottish people pronounce it and it was:AY-leenSo now I view this name in a completely different light. I think AY-leen is quite pretty and sounds more modern. What do you think of Aileen?

I knew two Aileen people. One pronounced it like Eileen; the spelling was because her family had a tradition of names starting with A. She had a sister Annette, for instance. She was the mother of a school friend. The other Aileen is my generation, with no Scottish links that I ever heard of, and she pronounced it AYleen, where Ay rhymes with Ray and May.I really don't like most -een and -ine names, and these are no exceptions. (The only real exception I can think of right now is Justine.)

You asked about this really recently. https://www.behindthename.com/bb/baby/5157907Aileen looks awkward and sounds pretty but dated, as does Eileen.Aileen does not sound more modern to me because it's the EEN ending that makes it dated, not the long I sound (Isla feels modern, for example)

I didn't know how it was pronounced back then and am now asking about the Scottish pronunciation which I didn't do before ;)
