Holden for a Girl
Replies
It’s bad enough on a boy, to be brutally honest.
I think it's masculine, but vaguely pretentious when used for either gender. Holden Caulfield isn't an appealing namesake.
There was and perhaps still is an Australian version of, I think, Ford cars called Holden - you will know, Cake - you lived in Oz for a while, didn't you? They were sold in South Africa for a while and I've got a vague impression of something large and clunky. And even that seems odd, because it sounds like 'holding' ... and no nn possibilities that I can think of, so the girl would either go by her name and nothing else or be called Popsy or Sunshine. Not an idea that appeals! Though people do use car names for humans sometimes, and vice versa: Lexus on a female is daft, but a name like Mercedes can be human or vehicle quite comfortably. Not Holden, though.
I don’t mind it but I also like Hayden for a girl, too.
I hate it. I hate it for a boy too.
That said, I know a cute little girl named Holden and she has bright golden hair and her family calls her "Goldy Holdy" which I think is pretty adorable.

I actually love it, boy or girl. It's sweet, and there is the Holden from Catcher in the Rye connection. Am I the only one who loved that book?
I've never read it, though it's been on my list for a while. I've heard that Holden can be quite insufferable at times, though.
I thought it was great, and I think most people who criticize it haven't read it.
I don't like it, especially for a girl
It's hideous no matter the gender.
I don't like Hunter, Holland, or Golden much, but I'd prefer those to it.

Absolutely not.
Holden Caulfield was whiney, and its an overwhelming association.

I can agree with that. It's unfortunate, as it's not a bad name. It sounds like it would be a very popular boy's name down South.
I hate it for a girl. I actually really like it for a boy. I don’t love it, but I like it. We considered it for one of my twins, but DH didn’t really care for it. Glad Now we didn’t, but I still like it. For a boy.
I am not a fan of it on boys (especially thanks to Holden Caulfield), but think it's an absolutely adorable girl's name. I do tend to favor BNOGs though; if it's not your style, that's alright :)
