Crystal
I used to really hate this name. It had always imparted an impression of a conniving soap opera villain - a woman who was very pretty and jaded, but not nearly as refined or cultured as she thought. I know that is an extremely negative image, but it didn't help that the few Crystals (of various spellings) I've come across in my life haven't been the nicest people - though I don't know any personally. However, I've started thinking about this name, and suddenly... I didn't hate it anymore. I'm not entirely sure what I think of it yet.Anyway, what do you think of Crystal?***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381

Don't really like it

It’s horribly tacky to me, plus there are way too many kre8tyv spellings. I prefer Christelle.

I've always liked it, and I think I would have even if I didn't have a favorite cousin named Crystal. It sounds bright and sparkly but simple at the same time, like actual crystal can be.

I don't like it at all. As a word, it feels bulky and rough; I just don't find it very feminine. Add to that that the Crystals (various spellings) that I've known have either been bigger and quite unfortunate-looking women or reasonably attractive yet arrogant women, and you will understand why I have an aversion to it.

I like it in a GP-sh sort of way.

Linda Evans as Krystle from Dynasty could be the source of your image, maybe?I have known a few Crystals and they were all really nice, likeable people. Come to think of it, they have all been better-looking than average, too. I think it's a nice name.
It's a little bit like Brandy imagewise ... I don't think it's tacky (some people do), but I have an expectation that a Crystal is not likely to be overeducated or wealthy.
In my mind, it's in the same category as Amber ... sort of 70s-80s quasi-hippie / romantic style, of the middling class. Also it is like Hazel, Ruby - not a complete novelty name like Brandy was. Similar styled popular names today could be Scarlett, Jade, or Paisley (and maybe in the near future Luna, Nova if they stay popular).

Yes, I think Krystle Carrington plays a huge part in the image I have - but wasn't she a "good girl" on the show, while Joan Collins' Alexis was the villain? I never actually watched the show, beyond a scene where Krystle tackles Alexis into a pool. (Also, let me just say that that is a horrible spelling of Crystal.) It also sounds like you've had better luck with real-life Crystals than I have. And yes, Brandy still conjures that image for me (Brandi even more).

It's up there with my least favorite names of all time. I'm too young to understand what could have possibly been appealing about it to parents in the 70s and 80s. To me it seems sadly faded but it still manages to be gaudy. I picture a former Vegas showgirl who now has really outdated hair, chain smokes, and wears sweatshirts with kittens all over them.
