Athena
I’m just reading about the goddess Athena, not for the first time, and I suddenly find the name very striking and elegant. What do you think of it? What middle name(s) would you suggest to go with it? Thank you! :)

I like it very much, and some stunning middle names that would go over well are Leora / Liora, Grace, Celeste, May / Mae, or Elle

I think it’s beautiful. We actually have a princess in Denmark called Athena. Her full name isAthena
Marguerite (from her paternal grandmother, Queen Margrethe II)
Francoise (from the maternal grandmother)
Marie (the mother’s name)I’d absolutely name a daughter Athena.

Athena Galadriel! Brilliant. I also like Athena Halcyone, Athena Hadassah, Athena Ceridwen, and Athena Leonore. I’ve also just learnt for the first time that Sorcha is not a derivative of Saoirse!

The goddess is interesting, but after reading the myth of Arachne as a kid, I didn't have a great impression of Athena.I heard it as a person's (rather than a goddess's) name in 2002 in a movie, and I had a similar reaction to yours (it seemed striking and elegant). Now that popularity has gone up in the US, it seems softer, which isn't bad...less striking but still elegant. Similar to how I see Zoe, Freya, Aurora, Althea.I'd pick Athena Jane as a combo right now.Other middle names...
Athena Hippolyta
Athena Gwendolen
Athena Mercedes
Athena Mercy
Athena Patience
Athena Olivia
Athena Olive
Athena Polly
Athena Polydora
Athena Rebecca

Has your impression changed since, or do you still have that same reaction of dislike? I definitely find myself holding onto impressions I formed as a youngster sometimes. Athena Gwendolen is particularly fantastic, as is Athena Polydora :)

My impression hasn't changed. I knew she had different aspects. I'm not going to forget that she was depicted as cruel and vain at some points, but that's true of most ancient deities (maybe I hold it against her more, though, because she's meant to be the goddess of wisdom); I also always thought it was interesting that she was born fully grown, from her father's head.

Ha! I, too, am behind the times, I didn’t realise it was on such a steep upwards trajectory in the US. Luckily it’s not as popular here, but that’s still good to know!
