I tend to think of it as a better middle name, probably because it's hard to shorten, but it's not inevitable. Lavender looks long but it's only three syllables and plenty of 3-syllable names don't end up with nicknames.

The ones I can think of are too childlike to survive long: Lala, Venny, Lavi, Ladi, Lali, Vendy, etc.
