It's always had a sort of cartoon / puppyish vibe for me. Because of the sound, maybe? I don't know what the association is.
It's one of the surnames I'd pick, if I were trying to think of one that sounded stereotypically Irish.- mirfak

probably ...Because it sounds a lot like Smurf?I know somebody who has a dog named Clancy; if she had another dog I bet it would be Murphy or Finnegan or something else Irish.
