I much prefer Ian over Howard. I'm baffled, though, by why you would put Howard in the mn spot if you intend to call him Howie regardless.

Howie is my husbands choice. I’d rather go with Ian.

I would have named our son Ian, without hesitation, but unfortunately my SIL had just divorced an Ian so it would have been very tactless, so we didn't. Howard isn't used much where I live - one elderly relative is the only one I know - and though he's a good guy, I haven't got any strong feelings about the name, for or against. And I'm afraid Howie just doesn't do it for me at all.Does "Ian Howard Douglas (Howie)" mean Howard would be his name of use, regardless of which name came first? It's more convenient to put the first name first, but I've known plenty of people who use their mns and nobody dies of shock. I must say, though, that two sons named Ian and James would be very wonderful - such a good Scottish vibe.

I prefer Howard only very slightly but I think Ian Howard Douglas flows better than Howard Ian Douglas.

I like Ian as a first name best

I prefer Ian for the first name. Howard feels quite old and dated. I think Ian is more wearable.

If I'm honest I dislike them both. I just imagine an unfriendly middle aged man in a suit. I'm sure if I met a young boy with the name I wouldn't think that though, and neither name is offensive. If you want the nickname Howie, it makes the most sense for the name to be Howard Ian Douglas 'Howie'.

Ian for the first, definitely.
Howard is very old-man, and not the handsome classic style.
