Jonah for a Girl
I spoke to someone whose minor daughter is named Jonah. I'm sure of the spelling. Getting accurate spellings is part of my job. I'm also sure it was a girl because she had referenced her child using the word "daughter". What do you think of Jonah for a girl?

Not a fan, but I really love Jonah for a boy!

It’s ok. I agree that Jona is the better spelling for Girls to differentiate between the popular boy name Jonah.

Nope. All boy, to me. Just because it ends in -ah, that doesn't make it a girl's name.

Jona, yes. Jonah, no.

Yeah, whatever. Sounds a lot like Joanna, and Joni. Of course, it's more appropriate for a guy since historically it's a name for guys, and it's def a "guy name on a girl." I know a teenaged Jonah (m).But the name's shape seems genderless to me, and the meaning is genderless or could be feminine. I don't like it as a guy name. I would like it much more if it were a girl name.

Ugh, no.

No thanks.

It's a no from me. I see why because of the -ah, but it's strictly masculine.

No, No, No. A thousand times no!!!

Here here!!A zillion times over. Jonah is SUCH a handsome name for a boy. I can't even begin to imagine a girl with it. It's idiotic and would be very soul-crushing.

That's a big nope from me. Just because it ends in -ah doesn't make it feminine, and especially not when the story is so well known. I'm sure it's livable. There's just so many other options out there.

It's a little annoying in the way that "A ending = feminine" is annoying, because no, that's not how names work. But that annoyance is abstract. I don't really care.I don't like Jonah as a masculine name; as a feminine name, mainly it reminds me of Joni and maybe Luna or Jordan.

I think it's completely masculine and it's as silly as naming a boy Tiffany.

Idk, I think a comparison would be like naming a boy Teagan or Tatum or Madison, since they're more commonly feminine but have a masculine sound/pattern. Jonah still ends with an "A" so people could theoretically be like "yeah, most feminine names end with an 'A' with exceptions"

Perceived gender of names that originate as surnames is typically more flexible, so imo Jonah isn't like Teagan, Tatum, Madison in that way. But, as far as I know, the word "dove" (Yonah) is actually feminine in Hebrew?
So assuming that's right, it might've made more sense as a girls' name than a boys' name all along. And while I do automatically read Tiffany as feminine,I feel like historically it could easily have been a unisex nickname: it's short for Theophania which has masculine counterparts, and it's a surname. Plus, it's sound and recent usage reminds me of Whitney.

My immediate thought is "why?"*

I love it but I also love Micah, Ezra, Judah, Nehemiah, Jeremiah, Noah, Hekeziah, Jedidiah for a girl. I love the A ending sound for girls names, I love bible names and their meanings so why restrict these names just to boys. I would be delighted to meet a girl named Jonah.

I dislike it for a boy! And with Joan and Joanna readily available, I'm afraid I don't have much respect for the mother's good taste and/or intelligence.

Well it's not too bad, as far as masculine-names-on-girls go. Although I'd prefer it be spelled Jona or Joana, the h bothers me (same with Norah).

It’s neither here nor there for me. It’s like Joan with an “a” ending basically. So it sounds feminine, although historically it’s been used on males. Doesn’t surprise me.

no no no.I love Jonah for a boy and cannot see the appeal for a girl.
