There's no particular image or personality (except that it's very masculine and Mars-y) - it's just classicky, an empire name.
It's pleasingly racially empty, too - at least, when applied to an American. I dunno about in other places.

I much prefer Marcus to Mark. Not enough to use, though. I like Marcus Richard and Marcus Nigel.

I’m not a huge fan of Marcus, but I don’t see anything Wrong with it either.
I like Marc and Marco, and Marcos, so I see the appeal.
