I get an earworm every single time I hear or read the name Matilda.
Harry Belafonte. My parents used to have a record.
Ma ... tilda, Ma ... tilda! Ma... tilda, she take me money and run Venezuela!I have only ever met one Matilda, and she was a blonde girl from Poland (or thereabouts) born in 2006. Her elder sister was Malvina "Malvinka."
The name has a matronly, earthy, spare feeling for me. Not pretty or playful.
And it reminds me of the Roald Dahl children's story and the film, too - I think the character's name was chosen deliberately to sound old-fashioned and not childlike. I also think the book and film are party responsible for the small resurgence of the name, at least in the US.
And then there's "waltzing Matilda." Very historical...
So those are many different associations.
I don't love the name - it's meh. I don't really like the sound of it... -ilda just really doesn't float my boat.
But it's not bad.I'd pair it with something fresher- and younger-seeming.Kaia Matilda

Matilda has really grown on me and is now among my top 10 favorite girl names. It has an interesting mixture of medieval history and modern fantasy. The meaning "battle strong" makes me think of a warrior queen, but there is also something very down to earth about it. I picture a Matilda loving to garden and being adept at naming the uses of plants. My top associations are: 1) Empress Matilda or Empress Maud (1102–1167), Queen of Germany, daughter of Henry I of England, mother of Henry II of England. 2) Matilda from Roald Dahl's book of the same name, which was made into a movie in 1996.Matilda Vera
