Like: tons of character; nothing predictable here. Seem truly independent. Jay.
Dislike: sometimes, too characterish, not enough possibility (for a real person, that is. Can't really be too characterish if that's what you are going for)

Get rid of ones that to me seem hopelessly stodgy / oldmannish (George, Lemuel, Bertram); refuse to indulge you on the confusing - and I think unattractive - spelling of Juleann; dump Christian (sounds weak in real life to me, especially in this combo)

nonconformist/character names; early/mid 20c image but rare enough that they're not strongly "dated;" streaked with classic and Bible. Refreshingly, they tend to be race neutral as well.

Just the thing about picking nicks.

I really like many of the nicks, in fact. And Jackie isn't so bad. I guess the guilt is about the popularity. Ella Rae sounds like LRA.

I agree, believe it or not. They're not so much "Okay, if I have a Christian he'll be a Cricket from day one!" as "That'd be kind of cute if it sounded right on him." Guidelines rather than absolute rules, you know? :) I'm more than open to spontaneous nicknames, since I give them to people constantly and unconsciously; I doubt that my mother expected me to call my sister Jeanie at any point, as an example.

I have to admit I love how you've phrased this. But out of curiosity, how would you spell a name pronunced jool-ANN? I've been struggling with that a great deal, and the only two ideas that have seemed viable have been Juleann and Julanne.

I'm just not sure it could stand on its own--and I'm unfortunately not a huge fan of any of the names it could be short for. :/ But Jackie is so--so--neat, I guess, on a boy. I haven't the faintest idea why I like it, but I do.

I agree, believe it or not. They're not so much "Okay, if I have a Christian he'll be a Cricket from day one!" as "That'd be kind of cute if it sounded right on him." And "jeu" is close enough to Jew so as to make me uncomfortable, lol!

I love a lot of names I wouldn't ever have the guts to use, so I respect someone who doesn't give a rat's ass, so to speak. LOL. Some of the names are too 'out there' (to borrow Kristen's term) imo, but I can definitely see many of them on a child of yours, lol. The fact that you just didn't pull the name, say, "Stardust" out of your butt and say 'Aww, that's kewt' but there is a REASON for your liking it, it has a positive association for you, etc, is a reason, imo, for using a "less common" name. :)
