I think of the gun before I think of the horse. I don't like it. I'm a gun-approving gal from rural Idaho, but I still don't think this is a good association. It sounds low-effort redneck or wannabe country ("let's name him after our favorite gun!").
It seems very... short-lived. Like it's already dated but it wasn't even popular that long ago.
ETA: I think Colton and Colter are even worse. Like the annoying kid in high school who thinks he's cool and uses "gay" as an insult.

Love! Short but strong/powerful. I do associate it as a cowboy name because of it’s link to horses.
Personal preference is I don't like Colt. No real reason other than just not what I would pick. I do like Colton.
I love it, just not as a stand-alone. I love Colter and Colton.
