I don't like Briar for either gender, but I prefer it on a boy. I imagine a female Briar would bear the middle name Rose, and be named after the Disney princess. I can also see her as a spoilt and annoying child. I imagine a male Briar would be eccentric and slightly pretentious, maybe an artist.
