Emrys Pronunciation
How do you pronounce Emrys?
Since Rhys is pronounced REES, I assumed Emrys was pronounced Em-rees, but there seems to be varying opinions about the Welsh pronunciation. In the comments, some people say it is pronounced Em-riss.
What do you think of Emrys, and how is it pronounced in your area?

I actually would not know: I've never 'heard' someone speak this name.
I have always pronounced it Em-riss in my head, can't say I have ever met anyone named this or heard of them. I'm in the Midwest, USA.
Since it’s related to the name Ambrose, the EM-riss pronunciation seems to make the most sense, but figuring out Welsh pronunciation isn’t the easiest for me. Maybe that H in Rhys makes all the difference?
My husband loves it for if we ever have a boy, and I could be persuaded. But one of his close cousins (like a brother to him) has a boy named Emerson, so we’d probably look elsewhere.

Thanks everyone for your responses! The consensus on the board appears to be the Em-riss pronunciation.
I’ve always just said “Em-riss”
And I know people pronounce Rhys like “rees” but if I were to just think of it phonetically I’d say “riss”

I know two guys named Emrys.

I have a relative named Emrys. It's EM-riss.
That's also the way a 16 year old student has pronounced it, and how I've heard it said on TV shows.

I love it pronounced EM-riss. I thought my preferred pronunciation was wrong and it was actually supposed to be em-REES, but I just looked it up and there are a lot of people saying it's EM-riss. I also found some saying EM-rees.
If EM-riss is the right way (or at least common enough that I wouldn't sound dumb using it), then Emrys is definitely on my "would use" list.

I really like it for a boy and would love to see it used more. I pronounce it Em-riss and I think most people in my area (US west coast) would probably pronounce it that way too and some possibly (probably) Emreez.
