Shane vs Max
Hello everyone, I am a trans man (female to male) changing my name and have been stuck between the same two for months. My last name is German, similar to Berner.
Maximilian, Max for short, which sounds great with my last name, and I love long names with short nicknames.
Or
Shane, which I like better on it's own but doesn't sound great with my last name and feels too short.
Which do y'all like better? Thanks for the help!

I prefer Max to Shane. I think Max sounds friendlier and I think it would go better with your last name :) it’s more versatile in different languages too!
I personally like Maxwell better than Maximilian, but you know yourself best and what suits you. Congrats on choosing a new name!

I love Maximilian and Max. That being said, you should choose what you love! Maybe use Shane as a middle?
Hi !!!
I prefer Maximilian.
I prefer Maximilian.
Maximilian is just too droll. I like it on paper. But then I heard a guy at the mail store giving his name to the clerk and it was Maximilian and, I'm sorry, I was close to laughter. I think it just sounds too much like "maxi-million." Who would ever use the full name instead of Max? I mean, if you're just an ordinary guy. If you feel like a Maximilian then be that, I guess, but IMO it sounds overbaked.
I like Max by itself. Though it does seem a little bit on-trend, while Shane seems more adult now. So Max seems more likely to be self-chosen than Shane does.
I like Shane about the same as Max. Unless your surname begins with N. So I'm on the fence.
Max sounds more dark-eyed and easygoing, and Shane more tall and artsy, to me.
I'd rather name a baby Max, but if I woke up one morning and discovered I was a guy, I'd rather call myself Shane.

That's why I'm not sure about Maximilian, it seems a little pretentious. Right now I have a long, kind of formal name that I never use with a short nickname I go by, so this would keep the same feeling, but I can't see myself going by Maximilian in everyday life.
Ask your nearest and dearest to call you by both for 24 hours. See which feels the most "you".
Good luck!

I prefer Maximilian. It's one of my favourite names - very strong and regal but the nickname Max makes it approachable. Considering it goes with your surname too, I'd pick Max(imilian). You can use Shane as a middle name, unless you have another one picked out.
