It wouldn't surprise me - seems like the type of names a lot of younger Latino people have. Reminds me a lot of names like Yeriel or Yadiel, which I know several students called. Seems more masculine than feminine to me, as almost all people I know with names ending in -el are male. I'd expect it to maybe be a form of Jahleel? How did she pronounce it? yell-EE-ell? jell-EE-ell? I'm not too fond of the sound - too much "el" in a row.
