Chapman is a family name for me, from my mother's family.
If I had a lot of kids and was stuck for a name, I might use it. Or for a middle name.

It’s a surname and should stay a surname. Makes me think of chapped skin and the ice cream company.

Its an absolutely terrible name. No good nicknames (Chap? Chappy? Manny?) and will frequently be misheard.

As a nn, Chap is pretty unremarkable. Chapman, as a whole, is too close to chapstick. I pass.

Hi !!!Can you tell me which famous people of the past (or present) are the most immediate to honour with Chapman?I looked for the surname but there are so many... Which people comes to your mind listening this surname?Anyway I have no links nor ties with it. With a similar sound I prefer Chaplin. It is much more recognizable here.

Ugly, plain, snooty. And also kind of funny. Chap + man.

As a first name? Ugly.

I've never considered it as a first name, but I like it. I think occupational surnames work better than other surnames-as-firstnames.It has a very nice kind, down-to-earth, woodsy vibe.

I think of the university. Agreed with Crista that it's very much a surname - I'd get a snooty "old money" vibe if I encountered it as a first name.

Very much a surname. If it were used as a fn or mn, I would assume it was a family name.
