I think Will is very generic and ageless, and I vaguely associate it with 'willpower'.
Liam sounds more youthful and Irish, and I think in a few decades it might sound dated, about like Bill does to me now.
I'm mostly indifferent to both because William is just an inoffensive classic sounding name to me, but I'd pick Will over Liam.
